Apprenticeships provide employers with people who are eager to learn and develop and who bring new perspectives in a rapidly changing world.
14th – 18th March 2016 is National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2016) so there is no better time than now to take on an apprentice. With the National Living Wage raising rates for 25+ year olds, an apprentice is an affordable option, with some organisations benefitting from funding.
Traditional apprenticeships you may think of are the usual trades; plumber, electrician, joiner, etc however local Colleges(such as Lancaster and Morecambe College) offer apprenticeships in areas such as business administration, IT, animal care and working with children.
Apprenticeships provide practical training in a job coupled with study for a relevant qualification. The apprentice is paid a wage and gains experience and job specific skills. The study element is covered usually by attending college a day a week at levels from GCSE to a Degree.
With the government’s initiative in 2013 of young people required to stay in school, training or workplace training until the age at 18, an apprenticeship is an attractive option. Interestingly this change was the first time the leaving age has been raised since 1972.
