It may be easier in the future to take in skills from migrant workers outside the European Union.

The “Shortage Occupation List” records job titles where migrants are not required to meet a “Resident Labour Market Test”. Previously such job titles have been focussed on the high-end of the labour market. These titles are now under review and the Government’s Migrant Advisory Committee (MAC) is seeking to consider occupations and job titles that meet the following criteria:

  • show demonstrable national shortages that cannot be filled from within the domestic labour market
  • are skilled to the required level set by the Home Office
    and
  • demonstrate that it is sensible to seek to fill vacancies with migrant labour from outside of the EEA*.

To make its decisions the MAC is seeking evidence from interested parties in the UK including businesses and employers.

If you want to make your voice heard go to this link to read more detail and access the survey.

*The EEA comprises the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
