Cloud computing is here to stay. Whether businesses are comfortable with it or not, like social media and email before it, many employees are ahead of their employers. In the United States over 50% of firms are using cloud technology with employees accessing company servers over the internet.

Cyber security is a technical subject and one which your IT department/supplier will address. But many, if not most, security breaches come from employees: sharing passwords, sabotaging systems after a dismissal, or simply being victim to “social engineering”. The latter is similar to the processes used by fraudsters to gain access to personal bank accounts.

So an IT policy is crucial and, in most cases, a Bring your own device to work (BYOD) policy will be needed too.

Of course your IT department/supplier will have this in hand and their input is essential but don’t leave it to technology, address the vulnerability from employees.
