The case is being put for a new bridge at Lancaster and there would be much benefit to the community. There are also some benefits that would impact on employers specifically.

Travel to work benefits

Currently the return commute time for someone living on the Quay in Lancaster to the White Lund Industrial Estate is approximately 30 minutes. With a new bridge the commute could become less than a mile, say 5 minutes. Similar benefits would apply to those living in the residential estate of Scale Hall and working on the Lune Industrial Estate. That would widen the labour market and provide less stress for existing employees.

Safer and healthier city centre

Pedestrian fatalities in Lancaster are high and pollution from HGVs travelling round the gyratory system is significant. A new bridge would drastically reduce the need for HGVs in the city centre. That would make it safer and more comfortable to work there, widening the labour market.

There are further benefits to the broader community as Lancaster Vision sets out here.

In summary

The residential and industrial areas of north west Lancaster have long been “trapped” by a 20th century one-way system. One that is no longer fit for purpose. A new bridge at Lancaster would relieve congestion and mean much for employers.
