Smartphones may change how we learn.

Smartphones may change the way in which we learn, you should find your own learning style here.

No longer are new gadgets or appliances provided with extensive “Don’t do” lists and instruction manuals are getting shorter, simpler and in some cases, non-existent.

This benefits the fearless; those of us who pick up something new and experiment immediately, trying every combination of actions to see what happens. Twenty five years ago a new gadget could have been left broken within 10 minutes.  People who learn in this way are designated as “Activists”.

The more cautious take a back seat; these are people who are unlikely to be early users of any new gadget. They are more likely to be passive, watch others, learn from others and put “a toe in the water” first. They are described as “Reflectors”.

There are those of course who reach for the manual and are more interested in what the new device is and how it works rather than trying it out first. This means actively learning about the gadget, usually by reading, often before buying one.  The label for them is “Theorists”.

Finally there is a group that is interested in being shown how to use the new device, picking up quickly what they can do with it from a strictly practical viewpoint: the “Pragmatists”.

Of course, we probably recognise ourselves in more than one of these categories and they are not precisely defined here in any event. But the Smartphone is telling. What did you do when you first got one? It could be a key to your preferred learning style.

Fool proof and unbreakable, even submergible, benefits the Activist. The Theorist won’t find an instruction manual with most Smartphones and the Reflectors risk being left behind in a fast changing world. Perhaps the Pragmatists benefit most from You Tube or social networking. The way in which we learn is changing.

At Employer Solutions we recognise the existence of the differing learning styles. Our workshops are designed to give the head to all four.
